Think Outside the [Toy] Box
Digital Kids Media has been producing events focused on kids, youth, games, technology, and interactive media for more than a decade. It recently hosted the annual Digital Kids Summit in Austin, Texas, where a global community of industry veterans and startup innovators connected over a session-filled, jam-packed two days.
More than 40 speakers shared information covering everything from the Internet of Things, Millennial moms, and Generation Z, to how to build a business around augmented and virtual reality, drones, and other technologies. A trending and surprising fact that caught our ears: the average attention span of a goldfish is only eight seconds. Better [or worse] yet, the average attention span of Generation Z is only seven seconds (via Jeff Fromm, The Futurecast). Mind. Blown.
ModSquad was honored to be a part of the event (ten years strong!). Our very own Izzy Neis, Sr. Director of Digital Strategy, along with the amazing Dona Fraser from CARU (Children’s Advertising Review Unit) and powerhouse Krissa Watry from iOKids, provided an interesting overview of the difficulties and solutions that come with producing websites and digital platforms for children and families.
Sites geared for children must adhere to certain laws – advertising laws, COPPA (Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act), and GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) – while also considering registration “barriers to entry,” customer support needs, engagement and activity, and parental verification systems. Overwhelming as that may seem, it is manageable, and there are resources (like ModSquad, CARU, and iOKids) to help you along the way. Below is just a portion of the presentation (from Izzy/ModSquad).
