Friday Protip: Overwhelmed? Narrow Your Horizons

If you’re starting a big campaign, and you’re understaffed and underbudgeted, here’s my best piece of advice: Stop looking at the big picture.

I don’t mean you shouldn’t have the plan. You should absolutely have your big plan.

Once you’ve written out your plan for three months, six months, and a year, put it away. Don’t put it on your office wall or your desktop. Use the big plan to set up a single week of tasks.

You can’t possibly run a multimedia, triple A campaign alone. Everyone knows that, right? But you can send five tweets and make a Facebook post every day. You can send press kits to ten people. You can set up your beta sign up form. You can turn off the phone, turn off the instant messenger, and order in your lunch once a week in order to send personal replies to everyone interested in your product.

The only way to eat an elephant is one bite at a time.
